So, when I heard Syfy was putting out a new series that was an Earth-bound space western. I was really excited (especially since they took Eureka away from me.) The pilot makes me think the series has promise. There were some bumps and scrapes, but I'm looking forward to seeing where they take it.
A few points so far:
- Defiance (Old St. Louis) is much bigger than I was expecting. I'm worried that will made things difficult as the show goes on. In the pilot episode it made a few things weird as well (Specifically the idea that after a huge battle they lost 41 people, and this was a large number. Any amount is tragic, sure, but when the battle is supposed to be unwinnable, and the town looks like it's got space fore more than my hometown's meager population of 16k... 41 is not the worst thing in the world.)
- There were moments where the storyline seemed to follow that of Eureka's pilot. Maybe I was looking for them, maybe they were just there. (The fact that Nolan and Carter are rather similar doesn't help.) Specifically the jail scene with Tommy (who reminds me of Ford Lincoln Mercury so much it's almost not funny) and Irisa/ Jo and Zoe in Eureka, made me feel like there were unfortunate parallels between the two shows.
- The Han Solo "take the money and run, then return with a conscience" bit was nice, if predictable.
- I don't really understand Nolan and Irisa's relationship. I really hope they expand on that, because I would like to care about it... but for now, I'm waiting to be impressed.
- Waiting for the reason why an army of "nearly-undefeatable" Votans made a beeline for the city was a little annoying. There seemed to be no point to their decent upon the unsuspecting Defiants. And when it does arrive, this reason, the payoff falls flat. It's not obvious, which is fine. It's a veiled threat, but that threat is not clear enough to make it truly mystifying... or terrifying - as I think they were going for.
